The Protech Dent™Mouth Guard, made from a high tech material, brings you everything you ever wanted in a mouth guard.

Remarkably, our guards provide 30% better protection than conventional mouth guards, despite being only a sleek 1.6mm thick.

The thinner Protech Dent™ Mouth Guards fit much more snugly to your teeth, enabling you to easily breathe, talk and drink. In fact, they're so comfortable, you might even forget you're wearing one!

Protection Today

A recent study conducted by the Swedish insurance company Folksam of some 2000 Swedish ice hockey players showed that the number of dental injuries drops from approximately 60% among non protected players to about 35% if they use conventional mouth guards.

We think that is far from acceptable.

According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation there are annually on average 5 million dental injuries related to sporting activities in the US.

According to the American Dental Association, the total cost for an injured tooth for an individual is $15-20,000, including all visits and procedures. If that cost is split over 40 years the approximate annual cost is $500/tooth. Consequently, the total annual cost for dental injuries in the USA is $ 2.5 billion, an astonishing sum. Let Protech Dentâ"¢ bring that cost down.

How Protech DentTM mouth guard was developed

For years the material was used in Swedish and American operating rooms by our founder, Jan Akervall MD, PhD, an Ear-Nose-Throat surgeon. The material turned out to be much easier to work with than softer conventional mouth guards. The perfect fitting prevented it from moving during anesthesia and the hard, thin surface turned out to be extremely resistant to stress and forces. 500 surgical procedures have been performed without a single dental injury. Comments were heard from fellow surgeons and anesthesiologists how smart and simple it was to handle. This led to the idea of taking it to the sports market. If it protects teeth this well in the operating room, it has to be good for athletes.

In order to better understand why it worked so well we brought the material to the laboratory and started to test its properties. We found that the material was much stronger than the material in conventional mouth guards. When we modified it with carefully placed perforations and a unique design the strength and comfort.

Conventional mouth guards are made from soft material and transfer forces to teeth with risk of dental injury.

Better than conventional mouth guard options:

There are three main types of conventional mouth guards, all based on the soft material EVA:

  1. Stock guards -- These are pre shaped, bulky and uncomfortable, They are hard to breath, drink and talk with. They have poor fitting and users complain about significant drooling.
  2. "Boil and Bite" -- To some extent personal fitting is possible, but they are still bulky and uncomfortable; hard to breath, drink and talk with. Drooling is a problem with these as well.
  3. Dentist made -- The advantage is the custom fitting. They are less bulky, but still not comfortable and hard to drink and talk with. The major disadvantage beside discomfort is that they are far too expensive.

The first two options are too bulky and the third too expensive. None of them are really comfortable.

Protech DentTM intend to change all of that.

Mouth guards are mandated in many sports. However, studies have shown that using a conventional mouth guard still carries a significant risk for dental injuries.

Misconception of conventional mouth guards

A "The cushion effect".
It has been claimed that a mouth guard has to be of a soft material, in order to cushion the impact. This concept has not been scientifically proven, and our experiments clearly show how a soft material caves in while a hard material dissipates the forces over a larger area, therefore reducing the transmitted forces to individual teeth.

Soft material does not have a cushion effect.

An article in the journal Dental Materials, 2002; 211-215, by Danny Low et. al. confirms that thicker mouth guards have lower energy absorption.

B. "Thick mouth guards reduce concussions"
This has been argued for decades but there is no consensus amongst scientists concluding that mouth guards prevent concussions, especially not thick, soft ones. One theory states that thick mouth guards create a recoil space in the jaw joint (TMJ) which can make concussions worse (Walilko et al., Dental Traumatology (2004; 20; 255-260). Protech Dentâ"¢ is the only mouth guard on the market thin enough to avoid this problem.
